Featurecraft was proud to support the $6.3 million redevelopment of this community hotspot and transform the library's interior with our artisanal timber products.
DLM Architects, who spearheaded the project, wanted to integrate nature into every aspect of the library. They envisioned a range of timber shapes and designs – but these complex forms are quite challenging to fabricate. That’s why the architects came to Featurecraft, the undisputed specialists in custom timber craftsmanship.
Our factory team’s CNC expertise resulted in several one-of-a-kind pieces. First, we created plywood panels with beautiful leaf-and-branch perforations that were installed in illuminated strips along the library’s ceiling. Next, we made curved timber battens that were set within a sky-blue border, arcing gracefully over the bookshelves.
It's not easy to achieve curves in timber, but our workshop never turns down an opportunity to push themselves – and we were thrilled with how the battens turned out.
Alongside these custom elements, we created screens of solid Western Hemlock timber to frame the entrance wall and the internal staircase and balustrade. We also provided straight ceiling battens to create a juxtaposition with our custom curves.
Always mindful of safety and code compliance, we also ensured that each decorative system achieved the appropriate fire rating. Our products were also engineered to improve the acoustics within the library, so that visitors can read, communicate, and enjoy themselves within a peaceful atmosphere.
This game-changing architectural venture is poised to bring many benefits to the Ōrewa community. The upgraded library can comfortably accommodate community events, cater for large numbers of visitors and tourists, and satisfy the needs of any bookworm.
