Joinery is a process of transformation
As a boutique joinery company, Featurecraft’s work is about turning natural materials into multifunctional, aesthetically refined systems that transform architectural environments. Every one of our products, from the simplest plywood panel to the most complex custom feature, is designed to achieve a specific vision. However, it’s hard for architects, designers, and specifiers to use our joinery expertise if you don’t understand what Featurecraft can accomplish. So, in this article, we’ll cover the possibilities of decorative timber joinery and get you started with building your own Featurecraft system.

Understanding the possibilities of timber joinery
The first step to designing a joinery system is to understand the versatility of timber. We can preserve its natural form, creating elegant, rustic pieces – or we can alter it and create materials like MDF and plywood that are durable, lightweight, and easy to carve. Timber can enhance the acoustics of a room, facilitate airflow, and change the interplay of light and shadow across surfaces.
After all, there’s a reason that this branch of woodworking has endured over hundreds of years – joinery can create something beautiful and powerful out of something as simple as a pine tree.

Identify your design intent
What do you want to accomplish? Do you seek a decorative feature that looks absolutely incredible? Or are you approaching joinery from a function-first angle, thinking about acoustics and airflow and other performance-related factors? We can accomplish almost anything with joinery, but every project needs a clear design intent. This is your first step in designing a decorative timber system.

Designing for aesthetics
With Featurecraft, you have access to a team of expert joinery specialists, which means you can achieve almost any decorative vision.
You could choose to build a system out of Featurecraft’s standard range: we’ve curated a collection of refined, expressive pieces that will fit perfectly into any environment. Our large library of finishes gives you even more freedom in your design, offering you full creative control over the palette, style, and tone of your environment.
Alternatively, you could go down the custom route and ask us to bring your own unique vision to life. Our woodworking team can help you to experiment with form, fabricating innovative structures and molding timber into novel shapes. We can create custom stains and finishes to give your environment a truly one-of-a-kind look. From dramatic black battens to intriguing red and blue patterned panels to grand walnut stains, we can do it all.

Designing for performance
Featurecraft’s products are standalone assets, but they can also be combined to create multifunctional systems. For example, our woodworkers recently pioneered a combination panel + batten system that was installed at the BNZ Theatre in Hamilton. The panels formed a seamless timber backdrop for the stage, while the battens were specially crafted to deflect noise and improve audio quality within the theatre.
In a similar fashion, you could combine different products – panels, battens, contour baffles, geometric boxes, wall dividers and screens – to achieve different acoustic effects, highlight parts of your environment, and section your space into zones. Our Decor Planks are perfect for fine detailing and trims, while our HPL can be used to achieve a seamless match to other elements of joinery in the room.
There are very few limits on what you can achieve; reach out to our Sales team for a more comprehensive overview of your options.

Developing your specifications
If you don’t want to get into the nitty-gritty of timber joinery, that’s absolutely fine – we can give you a run-down of our default options and help you move forward with your project.
On the other hand, if you love to get your hands dirty with design – if you want to understand different ways of veneer matching, or experiment with staining, or talk about custom engraving and perforations – then we have a variety of design guides that you can request from us.
Our ultimate takeaway is this: a decorative timber system is an aesthetic and functional powerhouse – so make the most of our joinery expertise and design one that’s perfect for you.
